J.D. Salinger wrote in The Catcher in the Rye, “The carousel started, and I watched her go ‘round and ‘round. All the kids tried to grab for the gold ring.” It’s Carousel Day! The first carousel was conceptualized in 500 A.D., but it wasn’t until the 1840s when Franz Wiesenoffer created the first one. The largest existing carousel is in the House on the Rock resort complex in Wisconsin and has 269 handcrafted animals -- that’s practically a zoo!
