“We need to try to do the right thing every time, to perform at our best, because we never know which moment in our lives we’ll be judged on.” — Captain Chesley Sullenberger
Eleven years ago today, veteran pilot Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger performed the miracle of landing a U.S. Airways Airbus with 155 passengers onboard on the Hudson River after a flock of geese flew into one of the plane’s engines, causing a full-blown mechanical failure. All 155 passengers survived the unprecedented ordeal, thanks to Captain Sullenberger’s graceful water landing, averting a tragic disaster of epic proportion. The accident was just the beginning of Captain Sullenberger’s journey, as a federal investigation was triggered, questioning his role in the event. Ultimately, Captain Sullenberger was vindicated and more than a decade later the incident is known as the “Miracle on the Hudson”.
