43 years ago today, Muhammad Ali became the first professional boxer to win the heavyweight championship belt three times after scoring a unanimous win against Leon Spinks in a historic bout at the SuperDome in New Orleans. Just four years after his debut match, Ali won the world heavyweight championship from Sonny Liston in a major upset victory. For the next decade, Ali was a fighting champion, defending the tile in some of the most-watched television broadcasts of all time — his 1974 match with George Forman dubbed “The Rumble in the Jungle” was watched by an estimated television audience of 1 billion viewers worldwide in more than three dozen countries across the planet.
