It once was rare to see women creatives and executives in the upper echelons of the car world, but not anymore. Now, more often than not, women are steering the big changes in the auto industry.

Women today are instrumental in providing fresh takes and innovative ideas as more companies seek to modernize and prepare for the future. Here are some who are leading the way.

1. Mary Barra, CEO – General Motors

General Motors looked like a dinosaur on the road to extinction not long ago, but the American auto behemoth has turned things around under the leadership of Mary Barra. Since becoming GM’s first female CEO in 2014, the automaker became the first among the Big Three automakers to pledge zero emissions and total electrification by 2035. It’s a direction that will forever change the automotive industry. Fortunately, we’re likely to get some stunning EVs from GM as a result.

2. Jordan Brompton, co-founder and CMO – myenergi

As the chief marketing officer of British renewable energy company myenergi, Jordan Brompton is looking to change the way we think about sustainability. The company makes the world’s first EV charger that runs 100% on renewable energy, which would be a game-changer in the global race to electrify our vehicles. Since founding the company in 2016, Brompton has overseen myenergi’s rollout of numerous new products aimed at cutting the cost and environmental impact of powering our lives.

3. Amy Shore - automotive photographer

Amy Shore credits the Goodwood Revival with igniting her interest in classic cars, and she’s been traveling around the world to photograph them ever since. Shore’s work is often able to convey an intimacy that other photographers might overlook, emphasizing the personality of vintage cars by capturing them in naturalistic, unpretentious settings. Her clear affection for her subjects has caught the attention of major brands like Mercedes, with many more carmakers likely to follow.

4. Helen Davock, Head of Laboratory – Bentley Motors

British engineer and academic Helen Davock has worked at Bentley for 21 years, playing a crucial role in the research and analysis of new vehicle components for the revered luxury marque. In 2016, she was named one of Autocar’s rising female stars in automotive product development. Last year, her work was highlighted as a part of Bentley’s Driving Change initiative.

5. Ruby Akhtar, Business Relationship Lead – Advanced Propulsion Centre

The Advanced Propulsion Centre is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transitioning the automotive industry from its internal combustion engine legacy into an electrified, zero-emissions future.
