Most auto enthusiasts associated iconic French manufacturers with Citron, Renault, and Bugatti, brands primarily known for beauty, elegance, performances, and, most significantly, French craftsmanship. However, there is one French brand that flew under-the-radar during the 20th century. That brand was Facel.

To begin to appreciate the beauty of the brand, all one needs to do is to take a look at Facel Vega’s logo.  Founded in December 1939 by Bronzavia, a manufacturer primarily specializing in military aircrafts, the company launched under the management auspices of designer Jean Danionos, known for Citroen Traction coupes and cabriolets, who geared the brand toward producing high-end car bodies (Coachbuilding) before transitioning to make luxury cars for the market throughout the 1950s. Here’s a brief timeline of what this well-kept secret in automotive history looked like.

In 1954, Facel rolled out the Vega with its stunning looks that were unheard of at the time. Using a Chrysler V8 to lug the luxury beasts around, the manufacturer stayed true to American power, even as the company rolled out vehicles that were twice as heavy as the big American cars. Most of the cars were hardtops, but they also rolled out a few convertibles; the four-door model, Excellence, didn’t hit the streets until two years later.

Facel subsequently entered the sports car market with the Facellia, which was similar to the size of the 190SL from Mercedes. The coupes were sleek and stylish, borrowing characteristics from their German rival. The car also had great handling and offered a great ride for the time. Along with its well appointed cabin with high quality materials, and great handling, owners made time to just spend time in the cars; nonetheless, the Facellia faced several challenges with its powertrain and quality controls, which resulted with the Facellia being short-lived.

The Downfall of Facel

Although globally recognized for manufacturing beautiful cars, the Facel company started going down a slippery slope, primarily due to financial difficulties and production challenges. Despite its early success and reputation for luxurious, high-performance vehicles, the company struggled with rising costs and quality control issues, particularly with the Facellia model. Insufficient capital and management issues exacerbated the financial strain and hampered the company’s ability to innovate and compete effectively. By the early 1960s, Facel Vega’s economic problems became insurmountable, leading to declining sales and investor confidence. The company's inability to resolve these issues ultimately led to its closure in 1964, ending a brief but notable chapter in the history of luxury automobiles.

Although the company was not successful, the car and its company is forever cemented in the innovative and inspiring history of French automotive design, renown for creating some of the most breathtaking cars during the manufacturer’s short-lived stint in the 50s, which, in the end, revolutionized design and pushed the boundaries, hence consumer expectations, of what makes a car elegant.

C’est la vie!
