Craft Ideas: Turn Something Old Into Something New With Chalk Paint

I had the ugliest nightstand. It wasn't always ugly, of course. It was just in terrible shape: chipped varnish, scratched wood, water stains and no protective coating.
You all these pieces of furniture in your home; I know you do. You can either donate it and buy a new one, strip the finish and start over, or use chalk paint to give it a makeover. Chalk paint is about a thousand times simpler than stripping the finish off something, the latter of which is endlessly messy.
You don't need to sand anything with chalk paint. Just wipe the furniture down and start painting. I used an off-white for this particular nightstand.
But there are so many color options and these can make awesome accent pieces. Chalk paint mixes well with other paints too, like regular old latex paint.
Typically you'll need 2 layers of chalk paint to get a really nice finish. Chalk paint is always matte. After you do that, add wax and buff it to get an attractive shine. Or you can use a spray paint protective clear coating or polyurethane. At this point, depending on the style of the piece, you can distress it.
Distressing it is simply lightly sanding off the edges for a shabby-chic effect. ONLY DO THE EDGES. If you sand off random places, it'll just look weird.
