Don’t get us wrong, the parade and the football and the turkey are all really great Thanksgiving traditions. But if there is one tradition above all that warms the heart even more than Aunt June’s gravy, it’s the National Dog Show. Every year since 1933, this cavalcade of delightfully furry friends has brought joy to millions.

So naturally, being the car geeks that we are, we wondered how certain popular dog breeds correspond to some of the most popular cars around right now. We had a lot of fun, and we’d love to hear your thoughts on which car you think represents different breeds.

THE LABRADOR RETRIEVER AND TOYOTA RAV4

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) the most popular breed in the U.S. in 2020, and in fact for the last 30 years, has been the Labrador Retriever. This pup is popular for good reason: according to the AKC it’s social skills are off the charts - it’s basically the friendliest dog in the world. The Labrador Retriever is playful and loyal to family, and it’s not a teeny tiny purse dog. All in all, this is probably the perfect dog for any family.

To wit, the top selling non-truck in the country has been the Toyota Rav4, and we think this is the perfect pairing. This car is family friendly with ample cabin space, but it’s also really well rated by Car and Driver for its performance off-road. Just look at it, this car wants to have a good time. It’s definitely the Labrador Retriever of cars.

THE GERMAN SHEPHERD AND FORD F-SERIES

For years, the incredible German Shephard has been nearly neck and neck with the Lab Retriever. If we had to pick out a dog to bring home today, this would be ours. This breed of dog tends to be playful and very loyal to their families. On the other hand it can be wary of strangers. Plus they’re cute! So cute! Ahhhh!

The German Shepherd pairs perfectly with the Ford F-Series. This car is hands down the most popular car in the country. Its best-selling models are more family friendly four door versions, but it’s still a Ford pick-up so it’s rough and it’s ready to adapt to unwelcoming environments and haul its weight in gold, so to speak.

THE FRENCH BULLDOG AND HONDA CIVIC

The French Bulldog only recently overtook the German Shepherd as the runner up to the Lab, and for good reason. This scrunchy faced canine is absolutely adorable, and it’s not as energy hungry as the vivacious shepherd or lab breeds. This is the perfect city pup.

The Honda Civic has been a staple in the city since it came out back in the 80s. It’s small yet accommodating, gas efficient, and has plucky handling. This car is the French Bulldog in automotive form!

THE POODLE AND TESLA MODEL Y

The Poodle has long been a favorite breed for dog lovers everywhere. Their iconic coats have made them a perennial preference of creative groomers the world over. They’re very friendly and affectionate, but the fact that they stand out is what makes a poodle a poodle.

The Tesla Model Y is the 19th highest selling car in the U.S., which is saying a lot when you’re looking at a list that is basically all trucks and SUVs. At this point owning a Tesla is a mark of distinction much like owning a poodle, although that distinction will fade rapidly as they gather more market share.

THE ROTTWEILER AND SUBARU FORESTER

Rottweilers are the 8th most popular breed in the country. Their reputation for being fierce and mean belies an absolute charmer of a dog. Anyone who is blessed with having one in their lives can attest to their absolute chillness - though if threatened this pup has quite a bite.

The Subaru Forester is similarly soft on the inside, but can get rough if the need arises. The Forester is Subaru’s top seller, and for good reason. It combines their legendary durability with a comfy family friendly interior.
