The Detroit Red Wings were close to making the playoffs last season, missing it on a tie-breaker. The rebuild orchestrated by Steve Yzerman has gone well but they still can’t take that next big step and both reach the playoffs and contend. They have a good team heading into the new season but don’t expect them to make it to the playoffs.
Everything You Need To Know
- The Red Wings have a great top six but the rest of the forward unit isn’t great. The same can be said about the defense. Outside of Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat, Lucas Raymond, and Moritz Seider, the roster drops significantly.
- Goaltending is a recurring issue with this team and has been ever since Yzerman took over.
- The young skaters will make or break the Red Wings this season. Raymond, Seider, Simon Edvinsson, and Marco Kasper are all under 22 years old and if they are ready, they will take this team to the next level.
Projection
The Red Wings were one point away from making the playoffs last season, making it easy to think they will get over the hump this time around. However, they have a handful of issues that will keep them from making the playoffs and extend one of the longest playoff droughts in the NHL. Don’t worry, the “Yzerplan” is still working as planned.
