Nestled below the fabled Hollywood hills and across the street from the LA County Museum of Art is the Petersen Automotive Museum. With exterior architecture resembling an F1 tire (on steroids, that is) in motion, the 5-star experience begins before you enter the door, and when you do get inside, the installations – perfectly displayed throughout the 4-story structure - give rise to the notion of adding a couple more stars.

As if it’s current exhibits aren’t enough of a draw, last weekend’s 11th Annual European Car Show featuring a car enthusiast’s classic cocktail of manufacturers from Audi, BMW and Volkswagon to Porsche, Volvo and Mercedes, were the icing on the cake.  Here are a few of our faves from the event:

First up is supercar royalty, the 1970s Porsche 911 Turbo “Whale Tale.” So called because of its extra wide caboose started it all. Porsche have been around since the 30s technically, but every Porsche we know and love today stands on the posterior of this giant.

If you like sub-compact cars and the thrill of living on the razor’s edge of car safety then this Smart Car Crossblade is for you! We salute and honor the audacity of the owner of this Crossblade, and their intrepid spirit in undertaking the journey to this car show in L.A. traffic in… this.

Ah, the much vaunted and hallowed Ferrari corner. The Ferrari Daytona despite being almost a half-century old still captures the imagination of each and every car enthusiast. And next to is the love of our lives, the 1963 Ferrari 250 Lusso GT in absolutely mint condition, in its time the fastest road car ever and now worth up to $3 million. Not to mention it is absolutely stunning. No jokes here, just reverence.

It’s the BMW E30! To the untrained eye this may just look like a supped up older Beemer, but it is so, so much more! This car represents a sea-change in the way luxury cars were thought of, and consumed. The E30 was the 2nd gen 3-series, a mid-trim luxury tier so ubiquitous today we take it for granted. But there was nothing inevitable about the genre’s dominance and the E30 blazed a trail we still benefit from today.

And of course our favorite display at the show… the official Chihuahua of the 11th annual Petersen Museum Car Show in child-size Ferrari racer from the sixties.

Can’t wait to see what Petersen has up their sleeves for Summer 2022.
