After less than a year of construction, the original Wembley Stadium in London, England opened to the public on this day in 1923. Wembley Stadium is the official home of English football, having hosted 78 FA Cup Finals, six European Cup finals and one World Cup. A trademark feature of the stadium is its iconic arch that stands nearly 450 feet above the ground and is more than 1,000 feet wide, making the arch completely visible across the city of London. In addition to hosting numerous soccer events, popular musicians like Queen and The Rolling Stones have played at Wembley Stadium, filling up the arena’s capacity of 90,000.
“I was born to be a factory worker really, so for me the chance to get on stage at Wembley 30 years after we started is amazing.” —
