Today is the 101st anniversary of Babe Ruth being traded from the Boston Red Sox to their rival, the New York Yankees, establishing the Curse of the Bambino. For more than eight decades, superstitious fans of the Boston Red Sox blamed the team’s lack of World Series wins on the alleged curse. Losing Babe Ruth meant the Boston Red Sox were trading one of baseball’s all-time greats to their greatest competitor — Ruth participated in 10 World Series and hit 714 career home runs, earning him the nickname the “Sultan of Swat”. The myth was finally put to rest in 2004 after the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees in that year’s American League Championship Series.
