Amtrak, also known as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, started controlling all operations of passenger rail service in the United States on this day in 1971. For nearly half a century, Amtrak has provided everyone from railways Enthusiasts to traveling tourists a top-of-the-line train service that encompasses nearly the entire country. Accommodating more than 30 million customers every year, Amtrak trains travel to more than 500 destinations across the United States and Canada, operating more than 300 trains daily across 21,400 miles of track, making it one the most popular forms of travel in North America.
