Today theTUNDRA salutes World War II veterans in honor of Victory in Europe Day, recognizing the end of World War II in Europe on this day in 1945 after nearly six years of global conflict. Though the war would continue being fought in the Pacific until August 1945, the end of the European theatre of World War II was a significant turning point in history. About 16 million Americans served during World War II, nearly an entire generation of young men. More than six decades after these brave veterans returned home, the surviving veterans of World War II are dwindling every year, as less than half a million of these brave American servicemen remain.
“Veterans know better than anyone else the price of freedom, for they’ve suffered the scars of war. We can offer them no better tribute than to protect what they have won for us.” —
U.S. President Ronald Reagan
