Michael Phelps earned the title of most decorated Olympian of all time on this day in 2012, winning his record 19th medal after claiming the gold in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay final. Phelps would smash his own record four years later, taking his total medal county to 28 — 23 gold, three silver and two bronze. Phelps was recruited for Team USA after becoming the youngest male swimmer in history to ever set a world swimming record at just 15 years old, earning him a spot at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Phelps would participate in five separate Olympic Games and set 39 world records before retiring in 2016.
