Happy birthday to Kal-El AKA Clark Kent AKA Superman! The character’s birthday falls on Leap Day, recognizing the day the Kryptonian alien known as Superman landed in the fictional countryside town of Smallville before being adopted by farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent. Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1, published on April 18, 1938. Living in the big city of Metropolis and working his days undercover as Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent, Superman may not have been the first superhero, but his comic book series birthed many of the genre’s trademark archetypes and conventions.
“There is a superhero in all of us, we just need the courage to put on the cape.” —
