Retired professional basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored his 31,420th career point on this day in 1984, breaking Wilt Chamberlain's all-time NBA scoring record. Before the game even began, players and reporters all knew that it was inevitable that Abdul-Jabbar would not only tie, but surpass Chamberlain’s record before the final buzzer. Playing for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Utah Jazz, Abdul-Jabbar scored his 22nd point of the night with less than nine minutes left before the end of the game, officially placing his name in the NBA record books. Despite retiring at age 42 in 1989, Abdul-Jabbar remains the record holder in points scored.
